title: Papers by date
description: List papers first submitted between two dates, with arXiv metadata and abstracts, from /papers.json or the MCP search_papers tool.

  order: 4
---

`/papers.json` lists papers whose first version was submitted between two dates, newest first. Each entry has arXiv's metadata and the abstract. It reads the daily metadata harvest only, so it never builds a paper.

```bash
curl "https://arxivv.org/papers.json?from=2026-10-20&to=2026-10-21&category=cs.CL"
```

## Parameters

| Parameter  | Required | Accepts                                                                   |
| ---------- | -------- | ------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| `from`     | Yes      | First v1 submission date, `YYYY-MM-DD` (UTC)                              |
| `to`       | Yes      | Last v1 submission date, `YYYY-MM-DD` (UTC), inclusive. Not before `from` |
| `category` | No       | Only papers listed in this arXiv category, e.g. `cs.CL` (any position)    |
| `limit`    | No       | Papers per page, 1–100. Default 25                                        |
| `cursor`   | No       | Taken from the previous page's `next`; treat it as opaque                 |

A bad parameter returns `400` with code [`invalid-query`](/errors-and-limits).

| Field                                      | Meaning                                                                                               |
| ------------------------------------------ | ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| `papers[].version`                         | Latest known version                                                                                  |
| `papers[].submittedAt`                     | v1 submission time; this is what `from` and `to` filter on                                            |
| `papers[].updatedAt` | Submission time of the latest version |
| `papers[].withdrawn`                       | The latest version is a withdrawal                                                                    |
| `license`, `doi`, `journalRef`, `comments` | Present only when arXiv has them                                                                      |
| `coverage.from` | First date the listing is complete for. Earlier ranges hold only papers harvested or requested so far |
| `next` | Path of the next page; absent on the last page |

Use the IDs with any other endpoint: [`/<id>/metadata.json`](/json) stays cheap, while `/<id>.md` or `outline.json` builds the paper on first request.

## Dates and freshness

- Dates are v1 submission dates, not announcement dates. arXiv announces a day's submissions at 20:00 US Eastern, so a paper submitted on Tuesday afternoon usually appears on Wednesday evening.
- Revised papers keep their v1 date. They do not reappear when a new version is posted.
- The listing updates daily at 04:00 UTC, after arXiv's OAI-PMH feed carries the night's announcements. See [daily harvest](/formats#daily-harvest).
- Coverage starts on 2026-07-24. Earlier dates will be backfilled later.
- Responses are cached for 10 minutes (`Cache-Control: public, max-age=600`).

## From MCP

The [`search_papers`](/mcp) tool takes the same parameters and returns the same JSON, with a `cursor` field in place of `next`.
